The one rule that saves you money
When a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency instead of the local one, decline it. That offer — dynamic currency conversion — uses the machine's exchange rate, typically 4–8% worse than your bank's. Always choose the local currency.
Cash norms differ across Europe: Germany and Austria still love cash; the Nordics are nearly cashless; Czechia falls in between. Each country card in the toolkit carries the local norm.
